    My kids loved it!!!5
My 11 and 8 year old daughters loved this game! My 8 year old watched her sister more then anything! But my oldest loved playing the story line of the Winx girls!!!
Some how they also ended up with it for the gameboy and my 8 year old enjoys it more on the hand-held then the PC.

    Really cool game!4
I really like the game and I would like to talk a little about it. The two things that I was looking forward to in the game that was not in the game: 1. You cannot change from Bloom to another Winx Club girl. You have to be Bloom for the whole game. 2. If you want to get all the dragon flys and the seeds you have to do it before you battle Icy because after you battle Icy the game ends.
I am 10 years old and some of the games were really hard, especially in Sparks, but I liked it anyway and like to play it over and over again.

    Not worth it.2
My six year old daughter had a lot of trouble figuring this game out. It kept getting stuck and we had to re-boot the computer. Not worth the money.

    Amazing5
I bought these to work with GTR and FS2004. Both games are stunning in 3D. The setup requires some tweaking. I am running a Dell XPS P4 3.8Gig, nVidia 6800GTO, 1Gig RAM, dual Raptor setup, so there are no frame rate issues. They do indicate you may have to scale back the graphics on lower powered systems. I could not detect any loss of sharpness with the glasses. The darker the room, the better they work. nVidia cards have built in 3D drivers. The demo with the nVidia logo floating out of the monitor is incredible. My display is a 19" Sony 420GS running at an 100Hz refresh rate.

Does whats advertised... after a bit of trickery3
These ed glasses are meant to give the illusion of motion parallax and focus depth. The result is that games are more 3d than they otherwise would be, mainly from the sense of depth that is added.
These work by taking your game, which is rendered in frames, and splitting the image so that one frame is offset compared to the other. These frames are rendered in a specific order, which the glasses are synced too.
The ED glasses are basically like single pixel lcd's, where one eye piece is can close, blocking all light, or open, allowing all light. Every frame, one eye is blocked out, while the other is shown, this pattern alternates between each eye. This is so one eye only sees its particular angle, and the result is a parallax illusion is created.
Now, the reason i just gave that explanation is that you need to know how they work in order to understand the following points.
Because each eye is blanked out every other frame, your light output, and frame rate is effectively cut in half. So a 60 hz refresh rate display will run at 30 hz with the glasses. I have found this to be quite tolerable, but apparently others do not fair so well with such a low refresh rate. So, be warned that you either need to tolerate lower refresh rates and its accompanying flicker, or you need to make sure you display has a high enough refresh rate that when you do use the glasses you won't see any (120 hz base refresh cut in half is 60 hz, which is quite tolerable for most). Along with this, the glasses don't work well with odd numbered refresh rates, like 75 hz. I believe this is because the glasses evenly split frames between each eye, and most humans have two eyes, of which 75 hz cannot evenly split into 2. So be aware that if your display does support higher refresh rates that they are not odd numbered.
Another biggie is that because these glasses work on the same principle as most lcd monitors, they are not likely to work with lcd monitors. Without getting into physics too much, lcd's work off of polarizing light into a single state, and since the light coming out of an lcd monitor is already polarized, the passive polarizers are bound to negatively interact with the already polarized light. So, this may result in the glasses always appearing blanked out, not allowing you to see the monitor, or may result in ghosting.
Because of this i recommend only using these glasses with non-polarized based display technology. Examples would be plasmas, CRT's, DLP's...etc. I've effectively used the glasses with two dlp projectors, and have had no troubles.
The last point, is that, yes driver support sucks! I believe Nvidia is purposefully ruining support for these glasses to make room for their own brand that they are releasing. If you have a moderately new video card, as most gamers are bound too, you will probably find the glasses don't work. One solution is ED's drivers, however these are software based and kill performance!
But, don't worry, i work around i've found fixes the problem. There is a company who manufactures their own lcd monitor (special designed to work with polarizers mind you), and they also have developed their own drivers. This company is called IZ3D, and you can go to their site and download their drivers, which include generic support for shutter glasses. Then you must go to ED's site and download the manual activator, meant only for "testing." What you can do is manually activate the ED glasses using the activator and use "pageflip" mode. Then configure the IZ3D drivers to work in shutter mode, and there you have it.
Bottom line, the glasses are a nice idea, but lack support terribly. If you're willing there are workarounds though.

    don't buy for newer systems3
I bought a pair of these recently, the drivers do not work with newer nvidia cards at all, they just cause games to crash on startup for the most part.

I'm giving them 3 stars only because they work so well on older 6000 and 7000 series cards, looks like people with newer systems have to wait for the Nvidia 3d system coming out this year.

    Ronaldo4
I teach at a school where several of us share the same projectors. WE bought the wpg-150 to save wear and tear on our computers by constantly plugging and unplugging the cable. Our cable is heavey and we fear it may eventually damage the connection on the computer. The Viewsonic gateway is easy to install. You don't even need a cd! The software downloads directly from the unit itself. My only major complaint was going to be that the wireless audio hookup to play sound didn't work... turns out I didn't have it plugged in all the way! Now our only issue is one computer doesn't seem to configure itself well. The image seems to overlap... we're working on it. But even with these minor issues I would recommend this unit. In fact, I'm about to order another one for the other classroom.

UPDATE - The overlaping image problem was solved easily by changing the resolution of "monitor 2" in the windows setup. I've already ordered the second gateway!

    Not usable for critical work1
Despite reading a number of unfavorable comments (which proved accurate), this thing looked like it might be just what I need. My wife and I run a custom photo studio and use a good projector for showing pix to clients. Also I am a Photoshop instructor and use the projector in teaching. Both applications would be enhanced by ditching the cables from the computer.

First I discovered that the complaints about the software are all true:
The WPG-150 is assigned as the sole device on the system, so switching to the internet quickly is not possible. Worse yet, the thing allows you to "disconnect" without actually breaking the link, so the whole LAN is hung until all devices are restarted. OK fair enough I can remember that one trap, but then it gets WAY worse. Enabling encryption causes a conflict with the Windows XP firewall, and a nice sign comes up that says "connection rejected by WIN firewall". I found a way around that that involves connecting devices in a specific order. Still usable but a pain, UNTIL I looked at the image!!

The image quality is very poor. Not even close to the photo quality I require. It appears that although the hi res setting is 1080x768, it is actually up-ressing from a lower quality. Not only is there a large loss in detail but the image is actually blurry. To verify i wasn't doing something stupid, I ran a comparison: we have 2 Lacie 324 studio monitors for photo prep that are calibrated as close to identical as we can get (using a Munki and the touch-up controls) I hooked up one direct to the computer and the other thru the WPG-150. The difference was obvious and large. It wasn't even as good as VGA.

This thing might be OK for a situation where it never gets turned off and swapped for another device, AND the primary material displayed was text and saturated color graphics. It's of no use to me.

    Good for presentations4
As far as a presentation device, it worked great. I could display IE, Media Player without any issues. As a presentation goes, the fact that it changes the sound output works well since it will keep your laptop from distracting as a small sound source.

I was hoping to use it as a Media Extender(which it isn't). There were two limitations in this goal. 1, Media Center 2005 is not supported to be displayed by this. 2, It requires the output of sound to be it instead of your host PC's speakers. Both of these should not be a problem for you if you are looking for something to make it possible to hook into a projector you cannot stand next to.

Classic FPS. Just needs some work to run.5
What can you expect from a game that came out 15 years ago? A lot of fun if you are willing to take the time to get it to run.

Wolfenstien 3D was released in May of 1992 and set the standard for what a sucessful FPS needed to be. The basic elements of Wolf 3D can be found in one form or another in every FPS since.

However the game has become rather difficult to get running on todays computers. Being built for dos, it is hard to bring it into a dosless enviroment. There are some excellent emulators that have been released, one being Dosbox, and with Wolf's recent release on Steam it makes it easier than ever to play this classic game.

    Better recognize.5
Chris, or user "iamtheman_", who wrote the "I'm SO ANGRY at Wolf3D" diatribe is missing the point.

This game was so. Incredibly. Frieking. Awesome. ...when it came out..yea, what? 15 years ago? I remember playing this on a 486. It was revolutionary. So it doesn't use DirectX inputs. Do you scream at black and white movies, too?

And it says right there, on the flipping description that it won't run on XP. So...whose fault is it that it doesn't work on your XP machine, d00d? Seriously.

I think a fair review of this game would have to take into account that playing PC games that are 15 years old isn't something you do because you want a cheap game--it's something you do because you appreciate the genre.

A DOS gaming classic: BJ Blaskowitz, guns & glory4
Released back in 1992, when the best way to play video games was in a video arcade or on a Sega Genesis... Wolfenstein 3D revolutionized computer action games, changing forever the entertainment landscape.

To remind people of what it was like... top of the line PC games used new "VGA" graphics (more colors and detail possible than EGA; EGA had replaced CGA which was essentially four colors: yellow, purple, cyan, and red on a black background), and sound cards were a luxury item (8 bit, and then 16 bit sound through Soundblaster was AMAZING... prior to this we put up with our "PC Speaker" which had little clicks and bloops that tended to by muffled, high pitched, and annoying... coming out of the heart of your PC itself, not through your headphones), and CD-ROM driver were the wave of the future (you typically had to buy a "multi-media upgrade kit" to get the benefits of those). Mice had two buttons (one if you were on a Mac, and in those days, people made fun of Mac users for not having any good games on their platform). Online play? Forget it. The way to do that was 1 on 1 via your modem (if you were lucky enough to have one). When my family (always a late adopter of new technology) got one, it was 2400 bps (which was top of the line!). If you wanted to get online, you went through a BBS (Bulletin Board Service) or one of the newfangled online services like Prodigy, which essentially were their own service (access to the WWW was limited, or non-existent).

So put that into perspective, when you pick up this game now, as it's a relic of the past. Still, we can see the greatness present there even today!

Though other games had featured "first person shooting" and "3D maze wandering," and this title was itself a sequel to an unsung PC maze game called "Castle Wolfenstein" (with a viewpoint similar to the original Gauntlet), this title popularized those features, and did them in a highly polished and exciting manner.

Most of us who were young in 1992 were first introduced to Wolf3D through the brilliant marketing scheme called "shareware." The idea was that you could buy a game for cheap (a few dollars) at a store (back then games typically came in big bulky cardboard boxes, and came on a floppy disk or three, around this time the big 5.25" disks were being replaced by the ultra modern 3.5" ones which were more durable and held more data, a whole 1.44 mb worth!), which was a bargain.

For that price, you essentially got to play an "episode" worth of levels, full functionally, for unlimited time. If you wanted to play the "full game" (typically two more episodes of equal length, but increased difficulty and with extra features), you had to order it with your credit card over the phone or go to their BBS.

Shareware was everywhere, you could legally get a copy from your friend or download it from a BBS if you wanted. The idea being that the companies (like Softdisc publishing) wanted to get the word out, and get people playing their game, getting them hooked, and then they'd order the "full version," or register their shareware to get all the content.

A lot of us who were "poor" back then played a lot of shareware games, but few registered ones until we got older and could afford to blow money on games (just when we were supposed to be focusing on other things!).

Wolfenstein 3D will look dated now. The graphics are very pixelated, though detail increases as you move closer to objects. The sounds are adequate, and everything is pleasingly cartoony, but with a bit of a violent mature edge (you are fighting Nazis in torture dungeons after all). The gameplay is simple: turn, move forward/back, shoot, open/close door, strafe. The view port is in first person, but you will see your character's face and he looks angry and hurt as you take damage or get into intense fights. Most of the gameplay involves navigating the maze (on frustrating aspect is that you have no map, but I guess that makes sense considering you're a prisoner of war throughout much of the game), shooting the guards you encounter, collecting keys and health to stay alive and progress, and saving every other minute in case you get dusted (and lose all your gear... since you had limited "lives" unlike in games of this type now). There is no real "aiming" with the mouse as in later games, as your character just fires instant hit bullets (or hits from your knife) and if you are facing the enemy with your gun lined up on them, they get hit.

This game was the precursor to "Doom" and largely responsible for that game's success. Doom expanded upon the formula presented in Wolfenstein 3D and this title was largely forgotten by the world at large until ID Software went back to make the long-awaited sequel "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" a few years ago.

The original game had three episodes involving battling Hitler (each episode ended with fighting a huge "boss" character that took a lot of damage before going down, except on the easiest difficulty). The registered version had three more missions where you tried to stop a chemical warfare plot by the Nazis.

A sequel came out a little later called "Spear of Destiny" in which you try to locate the legendary Spear of Longinus, that pierced the side of Christ, which Hitler has stolen (along with many other religious relics), a la Indiana Jones. The gameplay was basically unchanged, just with new textures, enemies, and harder mazes. Overall the humor and iconic artwork as well as the memorable music, as well as intense action, made this a great gaming experience back in the day.

If you can put up with the technological limitations and obsolete visuals, this is a great trip down memory lane, to see how far PC games have come, and what simple, yet fun ideas were cooking in those days of yore. If you're not nostalgic about games from that era or the Wolfenstein series, consider this "a history lesson."

Technical Notes: I run windows 2000 pro, and when I purchased the "XPLOSIV" republished version on disc, I noted that the package specifically says that it's NOT compatible with Win2k. The solution of course (which I figured) is to just ignore the launcher, run the SETUP.EXE program to install the needed game files, and then move them to a new folder. Go download a free program called "DOSBOX" and use that emulator to run Wolf3D and SOD (both included in this package) in that.

There are a few glitches: my gamepad only recognizes three buttons (if I try to remap the controls in game, it only recognizes two!). Of course this game was designed for use with a Gravis gamepad (a popular four button controller for the PC back in the day that roughly resembled that which was used on the Super Nintendo), but most of us didn't have one, and so we just used the keyboard and mouse (which is fine).

When the screen flashes (hit by enemy, item picked up) there are some graphical artifacts left on the screen (until it flashes again or your something, as if the refresh rate is off). Your mileage may vary, but the game should be intact. If you try to run the game outside of DOS Box, you may not have any sound (just the annoying PC speaker), so be warned.

Gameplay is very good. You have a choice of time trial, single race or career. However some cars and tracks are locked out at the beginning. This is a big pet peave of mine. I paid for the game (using the Motorsportgaming funds ofcourse) and I want access to all that I paid for. Some people might have time to run a full career and unlock the treats but I like to jump in, experiment for a bit and get out.

There are three levels of difficulty easy, medium and OUTLAW. On the first attempt Outlaw is next to impossible. These cars are monsters. They will pull wheelies down the front straight and your back end will be in front of you before you know it, if you are not careful. Take my advice on this, start at easy and work your way up. The physics seem to be very well done, the cars are quite slippery and coupled with the force feedback it makes it very easy to get a feel for what the car is doing. Ai seems to be pretty good on intitial contact, they provide a little bit of bumping in the corners but generally seem to drive fairly intelligently.

Graphics are very good. I am running at a resolution of 1600x1200 full detail and get extremely fluid framerates. There does seem to be a small glitch though, every once in a while the graphics will skip, I have tried to remedy this by turning of the partical detail and am having favorable results. Will probably upgrade my video driver and see what happens.

The cars are well modelled and the track looks great. My only complaint would be that it looks slightly cartoony. Small gripe though it is still just a game. The sound quality is very good as well. The engines rumble appropriately, there seems to be a good spacial presence. No complaints here.

A much better game than you'd think it is...5
This is a very entertaining racing game. I am not really into dirt-track racing, and have never seen an event live, so I can not say for sure how much it captures its spirit, but it certainly seems to be immersive. I had much more fun playing this game than I had playing Nascar Racing 2003 (although I also like that game).

Note however, that this is not an easy game. These sprintcars are extremely twitchy and hard to control. It will take you a little while before you can get around the track in the harderst setting...

Hat's off to Ratbag's game. Great job!

Fantastic game. Start out on the easy mode though cause its a tough one. After you gain enough skill to win most races other options will open for you. Once you reach the higher skill level it becomes harder to win, so be prepared to practice a lot. This is as close as you are going to get to the real thing.
