    Customer Reviews

A must have for driving simulations5
After just a short time with this wheel I couldn't imagine not having it while playing driving simluations. Even without the force feedback, having wheels and peddles brings new life to racing games. With the force feedback, games are just unbelieveable. The sensory feedback you get gives you better control over the car and the whole game just feels better. For example, in a F1 simulation the cars feel as sensitive as you would expect. You can feel the rear end sliding around if you give it too much throttle. With a regular wheel you'd have to infer this sliding from the screen, but with this wheel you just feel it. It really provides an amazing gaming experience. The force feedback is definitely worth the extra expense. The wheel is simple to hook up. Just take it out the box, and connect the peddles to the wheel with the supplied cord. Then connect it to your USB port, plug it in and and load the software. The wheel clamps tightly to the edge of a desk. The peddle base is large, sturdy and comfortable. It's only drawback is that it doesn't have quite enough mass to it and will slide back a little during gameplay. The software included with the kit allows you to tune the wheel's feel to your tastes. You can do things such as alter the strength of the feedback and control the sensitivity of both the wheel and peddles. Each of the buttons on the wheel can be mapped to a different key combinations. All of the wheel's settings can be saved as a named configuration so you can set the wheel up differently for each game. The only other issue I've had with it is a lack of sensitivity in the midpoint of the wheel's travel. I've tried to correct it using the utilities, but it's a minor issue and doesn't change how much I enjoy the product. All in all, highly recommended. If you're fan of racing simulations, this wheel is well worth the money.

    Good and Bad3
The obvious: racing games are just more fun with wheels and pedals. If you play any racing game on a regular basis, you need to get a wheel. How does the Microsoft Force Feedback do? Here's the scoop.

First, the setup. On my Windows ME box it took four attempts to get the steering wheel to register and the configuration software to load. I get checking the USB port with my Microsoft Sidewider game pad (which works perfectly) to make sure everything was ok. When I tried to load it on my Windows 2k box, it went on the first try. I guess its a hit or miss deal, but it could be frustrating to inexperienced users.

Second, the included software. Monster Truck Madness 2 really (stinks). If you think "hey a free game, cool". Forgot about it. Really. The profile software, on the other hand, is very cool. Presets for some common games and the ability to tune things so when you switch games, you don't have to redo all of your settings.

Third the forcefeed back. It is notchy and you can tell there are gears running the show (as opposed to cables and pulley on more expensive rigs) but its better than nothing and even enjoyable. Definatley worth the upgrade from a plain old wheel.

Finally the wheel itself. It feels nice in your hands and the pedals stay put on the floor even when you're smashing the gas and brake in tight turns.

Overall, you can't do better for the money, but you can do better.

    Can't miss4
Adds an extra element to any driving game. Even Nascar2 can be fun again. Only real negatives are pedals like to move and shifter knobs should be designed a little different. Both are easily overcome.

    How to enjoy Microsoft Money4
Here is my review of Microsoft Money 2006 Premium, that is, last year's model. Honestly, after I installed Money 2007, I simply could not find any differences from Money 2006. Whatever improvements Microsoft put in, I don't use.

Here is what you must do to have a good experience with this product:

    1. Never use Microsoft Passport.

Passport is a universal password that can be used to sign on to multiple bank accounts, brokerages, merchants, and God knows what else. It is a security disaster. Avoid it!

Your installation of Microsoft Money will be a bit awkward if you want to avoid Passport. Some users believe that Money won't install unless you get a Passport. This is false, at least for Money 2006 and earlier versions. You just have to be careful (and resolute!) while you install. See also item 6. below.

    2. Never store your financial data online with Microsoft

MS Money allows you to keep all your financial data stored on Microsoft's computers, as well as on your home computer. This allows you to access your MS Money data when you are away from your computer. For the unlucky user, it leads to virtually insoluble computer nightmares. Apparently, the local and remote copies of your data can get out of sync. It becomes difficult or impossible to overcome data corruption on Microsoft's computers. You fix up your local data, and it gets scrambled again when you connect to Microsoft's computers.

If you observe 1. above, you will not have to worry about 2.

    3. Never use Yodlee to download account information from financial institutions

Yodlee (spit) is a company/method for downloading your account information from banks, credit card issuers, brokerages, etc. The way it works is that it impersonates a web browser and surfs your bank's (or brokerage's or ...) web site in order to suck in your account details.

The problem is that your bank's web site is designed for browsing by humans, not software. Small design changes to your bank's web site can cause Yodlee to scramble the data. Frustrating for you.

Many (but not all) financial institutions will download your account transactions directly into MS Money without the use of Yodlee. Yodlee gives you access to a larger collection of financial institutions. But it is not worth it.

If you observe 1. above, then you will not have to worry about Yodlee.

    4. Keep several backup Money files

Microsoft Money stores all of your financial data in a single disk file on your computer. This is convenient for you. Money also allows you to store several backup copies of this disk file. I suggest that you configure Money to store 4 (depending on how paranoid you are) backup copies. What this means (for example) is that if you work with Money one time on each of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, then you will get a total of 5 copies of the file that holds your financial data. The oldest (backup) copy will reflect the state of your MS Money data from Monday. The newest (not a backup) will reflect the state of your MS Money data from Friday.

Why do this? Because like all Microsoft products, Money will occasionally scramble up your data. If you are not able to unscramble (there is a "repair" feature that you can try) then your only hope is to revert to an older copy of your data, and kiss your most recent updates goodbye.

You might not discover the corruption right away. That's why I suggest keeping multiple backups.

    5. Back up your computer disk

This suggestion is not specific to Microsoft Money. But I feel obliged to mention this anyway. The more you use MS Money, the more you have to lose if your computer malfunctions. You can lose disk data due to a worn out disk drive, or an electronic failure in the computer itself. Your computer can suffer from fire, flooding, or theft. Your data can disappear from simple mistakes by users, or by the children of users!

So you have to back up your disk data. Most home computer users don't bother. But this bears repeating: the more you use an accounting program like Microsoft Money, the more you need to back up. Get to it!

    6. Purchase the normal, CD-ROM version of Money, rather than the downloaded (electronic only) version.

WARNING: unconfirmed by my personal experience. Amazon.com sells this software product in a box containing a CD-ROM and some sketchy paper documentation. You can also download the software directly from Microsoft. But I have been told that the direct purchase from Microsoft requires the use of Passport. As I state in 1. above, I believe that Passport is a bad idea. So it is probably wise to purchase the physical, CD-ROM version from Amazon.com.

    7. Find a community of knowledgable users

Like all mass market software, the technical support available for this product is useless. You should find a discussion forum for users of Microsoft Money. This is where you will go for help with problems that you cannot solve by yourself. I suggest that you read through the forum posts even when you don't have a Money problem. Look for major problems that might affect you. Forewarned, you might be able to avoid such problems.

Personally, I use the usenet news group microsoft.public.money. It can be found through microsoft.com or groups.google.com. Generally speaking, the intelligence level in this ng is solidly mediocre. That's in the nature of the Microsoft user community. If you find a better forum, please write an Amazon.com "review" of your own and share it.

    Good luck with Microsoft Money!

Performance is harassament and functionality is faulty2
I am a seasoned user of "Microsoft Money" since 2001 and used Money-2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007 versions. On the subject of convenience and integration of multiple financial activities, Money (and for that matter even Quicken) does fantastic job.

However, with 4-5 years of usage of 'Money', my money file has grown to nearly 21MB. With this size, I am getting pathetic performance which is consistently annoying. I have a laptop with 1.6GHz dual core CPU and 1GB RAM, however very basic activities such as looking at monthly report, budget report etc. takes 2-4 minutes to display on the screen ! Even if I go back and try again, it will again hang for 2-4 minutes. I will be lucky if I get 'any' operation finished faster then 5 seconds/transaction. The problem is with specific version but the way Money is designed to store its information. There were some comments on improving performance by using Database to store information but Microsoft chose not to invest money on that.

Another annoying thing I observed with Microsoft Money is with every newer release you will get fancier but more BUGGY software. So far I found '2004' release best in the bunch but once you upgrade the version and make new entries it is not feasible to go back to earlier version.

Let me give you example that will explain the problem. Most common activity one will have is it to download data from financial institutes. Money will connect to these institutes and get the data. It will turn back in 2-3 minutes with newer data and status as 'done'. On the "Account List" you will see, for example, 5 new transaction and when you go into that account there is 'nothing' yet ! Reason being, data is still in flight but status shows 'done'. After 2-3 minutes you will get the data in the account. When you try to accept the transaction it will say "data is still in flight" but you got status 'done' ! In short, after getting data downloaded from the institute, you won't be able to 'accept' them for nearly 5-6 minutes. I am surprised to see Microsoft is selling software w/o testing such basic functionality ! FYI, I noticed this bug only in 2007 release.

I wish to have a better software for my need w/o losing existing data but Microsoft hasn't decided to have better (not just newer) version yet. Quicken seems to have similar issues and it doesn't allow any migration facility for me to move my existing data from last 6 years. I can just wish that Microsoft Money 2008 comes with higher performance and basic testing.

If you are a first time user, prefer to compare both Money and Quicken for yourself before locking your data in one of the them. With 'Money', once your file grows larger, performance deteriorate significantly.

One last point-- even with above limitations, I am better off using this software then not having it at all. Microsoft is doing a good job of marketing its positive points so I won't spend time on that.

    Utter disappointment!1
I have been a Microsoft Money user for many, many years. (Going back to Money '98? I forget.) I reluctantly upgraded to Money 2007 Premium earlier this year from Money 2004 when I read somewhere that Money 2004 was no longer going to be supported. (I also read that Money 2005, Money 2006, and Money 2007 had issues. Hence my reluctance to upgrade.)

For years, I have sync'ed Money with my online accounts on nearly a daily basis. I'm that kind of focused on keeping my eye on my money, and Money has historically served me very well in this habit. Money 2007 does not.

    Since installing it, I have:

    1) Battled with my prior bank for nearly two months to get them to figure out by Money 2007 does not synchronize with their systems.

    2) Installed and reinstalled Money 2007 on several different workstations to test the synchronization issue with my years-old Money file and new, empty Money files. Always fails.

    3) Now I have *switched banks* thinking the syncing issue was my bank's fault. It wasn't. It's Microsoft Money's fault.

Syncing fails *every* time with a helpful OBRES 22063 error. Oh, yea, that
one! We all know just what that is.

I have read every Microsoft knowledge base article I can find. I have perused public.microsoft.money and other usenet groups. I have Googled. I have read blogs. The only thing I find is that lots of people have this problem with lots of different financial institutions, and Microsoft is doing nothing about it

In Money 2004, this worked flawlessly nearly every time. Why did it
    break?!?!!

So if you're looking to have Money synchronize with your accounts online, look elsewhere. But if you're all about putting everything in manually, this product will serve you just fine.

Buy a copy of Quicken instead!

    Customer Reviews

    Very nice force feedback joystick4
If you're a (flight) simulator fan, this joystick is really worth the money. It is well built with a nice feel and feedback effects.

When I was shopping for force feedback joysticks I was torn between this and the Logitech "3D" model. I have to admit, the Logic had a nicer design. The stick itself had a slightly better feel and the throw on the throttle control was longer and more precise. However, I decided to go with the Microsoft model because of the positive experience I've had with their force feedback steering wheel. Just like the wheel, the construction on the joystick is very solid. I expect this will stand up to a lot of abuse.

This stick is not without it's drawbacks. First, the throttle control is a bit small. I would like something a bit bigger and with a bit more resitance. Second, the force feedback is only activated when you are fully grasping the stick. This is actually a neat feature, but can be annoying when you don't feel like "properly" holding the stick.

    Expensive joystick, decent force feedback4
Wanting a controller for racing and flight sim games, I purchased the Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 Joystick. The first thing I noticed is that it seems to be well made. It is quite heavy, but not too heavy to hold. The force feedback is the #1 reason anyone would buy this, and this feature varies from game to game. On some games, it felt totally unnecessary and didn't add anything to the game. On others, it complimented it nicely. The feedback response seems to be strong on this controller.

I would recommend this controller to anyone that is *really* into gaming. Otherwise, forgo the feedback and just get a regular joystick. If you play console type games or shooters, get a gamepad!

One thing to note - whatever you do - do NOT lose the CD that comes with this. It contains the drivers needed to install this joystick. Microsoft does NOT have them on its website. Windows XP will not auto-detect and install the joystick.

MS Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 works good with Windows XP5
I have seen some of the negative reviews on how the Force feedback 2 works with Windows XP. My experience has been just the opposite. The joystick works very well with Windows XP. I followed directions and installed the software first. This took about 15 minutes, if you don't include registration. Then, I plugged the joystick into a USB connection, tested the buttons. They all worked, and then I plugged in the power. I am using it with Microsoft flight Simulator 2002, and it works perfectly every time. KUDOS TO MICROSOFT.

Its well worth spending more and buying a quality wheel. Of course you can spend hundreds on very expensive wheels, but in this price range the main contenders are the MSFF wheel, Logitech, and Act Labs wheel. These are all Force Feedback wheels which is a must feature now that games support it in a much more sophisticated way. Just feeling the bumps when you hit the curb or other cars, is not enough. If you're into racing sims, such as Grand Prix Legends, being able to feel subtle forces that let you know when the car is at the limit of traction, makes for a much more immersive experience and also makes you a better driver. I've used the MSFF for 18 months now, and it has it over other Force Feedback wheels in the following areas: 1) It has no weaknesses. Both the wheel and the pedals are good. Many wheels fall down in having poor pedals. Being able to apply delicate acceleration and braking is crucial. The Microsoft pedals have good travel and feel. In comparison a lot of Logitech owners have sunstituted their pedals for CH Pedals - which adds to the cost and hassle. 2)It uses an optical reader rather than potentiometers (Pots). Pots wear out quite quickly, the Microsoft Wheel has the same precision it did 18 months ago after hundreds of hours of use. Some people tend to be anti Microsoft which I feel have clouded their opinions when comparing the MSFF with the Logitech Wheel. I don't think you'll be disappointed with this wheel.

I would have wanted to know details about the product-there was no product information, there was no installation CD, no instructions. Even though the box that it was mailed in was badly damaged, the product was in good condition; however it was incompatible with Windows Vista and was probably meant for PS3. Can I return or send it back? Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback Wheel

A good result for the truly dedicated4
The value you get from this product will depend upon your dedication to race gaming.

I bought it for my sons who would be using the machine for an hour or two a day. Whilst initial enthusiasm was expressed by all the reality is that the computer is still used as much as it was, but this wheel has not been out of the closet since April. Here are the facts (at least according to us):

    a) The base of this unit is huge, so when attached to a fairly standard computer desk with sliding keyboard drawer there is no room for the keyboard too.
    b) The unit has three different wires which come from the back of the unit, so these either have to be threaded over the back of the desk each time, or wrap around the front getting caught up in the kids legs.
    c) On many of the games we tried the force of the force feedback was much stronger than in typical arcade games, too strong for my 7 year old to handle. (Some games allow this to be altered, but not all)
    d) Most games require the wheel to be re-callibrated for each use, perfect for perfectionists but again it means significant 'daddy intervention' when the kids want to switch games.
    e) The power transformer is directly welded into the plug prongs, so this beast takes up three slots in a normal power block, thus requiring its own power block.

Now, on the up-side. When I use the properly installed wheel you can callibrate things so that it does handle like a real car. So if you can set things up properly, and leave them set up, then I suspect this is a very good piece of kit.

But for the casual user, too bulky, too messy and too much like hard work to be used frequently.

    great wheel5
I have had this wheel for over 2 years, and it has been terriffic. It has gone from windows 98 to XP and is just as compatible as ever. It gets used and abused playing all types of games from the dirt track racing series, to formula 1, to nascar 4. It just keeps delievering the realism. I paid 150 bucks for mine, and would pay it again, but now the price has dropped. The forces are as real as it gets, buy this wheel now, you won't be dissapointed.

    A True Winner5
I bought this wheel mainly because I wanted my buddy to be able to race with me. He did not have a wheel, so I sold him the one I had and bought this one. Let me tell ya, very good investment. Not to knock Logitecs Wingman Formula Force that I had, but this wheel accells that one by leaps and bounds. It is more precise in control and in the FF mechinisum. I have found only one downfall. Although the clamping mechinisum is solid and hold under extreme forces, it requires a lot of room between your desktop and the top of your keyboard. Over 4". So if you have a desk that has this kind of room..., get it. If not, modify your desk. Or get the Logitec..., it's my second choice.
