Best Warhammer to PC game conversion to date.
I love this game... I have been a fan of Warhammer and Warhammer 40k gaming for about 20 years. Many of the video game adaptations have failed miserably, with the exception of Chaos Gate which is no longer available. This game is one part bloody violent sports, one part turn based tactical stategy. I am not a fan of sports in general, but I make an excpetion for this game since it plays out more like gladiator combat than a football game. The free online component is great, it is fun to challenge your team against other 'real' players, however, since my team is fairly new I seem to get a regular stomping... If your a Warhammer fan, you must buy this game. If your a turn base tactics fan you will also like this game. Lastly, game replay seems promising since each race has a different strategy when it comes to their style of play. The game starts off with the following races, (although I have seen additional races promised for a later expansion): Chaos, Orks, Goblins, Wood Elves, Skaven, Humans, Dwarves, Lizardmen
Bloodbowl for PC is here!
I got hooked on the table top version of this game many years ago. Alas, I only played it for about a summer because with different work schedules we couldnt all find time to get together (I swear playing with some of those guys was like playing with Father Time, almost 3.5 hours to complete a game). Anyways, I was hoping this game would come out on PC for about a decade (the other PC version was a nice diversion but was only based loosely on the rules and ultimately not satisfying).
So, how did the new version pan out? Well, outside of my computer crashing about a week after I downloaded it off of Steam, it is great! It is very loyal to the board game (with the new rules) and only takes about an hour to finish a match. It is the most addicting game I have ever played! For those that are not familiar with it, it is a cross between Chess, Football, and a Fantasy RPG. My wife is amazed at how much I enjoy this game because she thinks a lot of the other PC games I have look a lot more fun than some tiny Orc dudes throwing around a spiky football on a chess board.
Now, the feedback, I diasgree with a previous post about the commentators (they suck and serve no purpose). I play on Hard and it is a little too easy. The only discernable difference that I can tell between Hard and Medium is that all of your opponent's Dodge and Pick-Up rolls tend to suceed now matter what roll is needed. I have not played an online opponent yet (too busy enjoying the game) and I havent tried the real time game (and probably wont). Get this game if you've played the tabletop version! You will be glad you did!
Hopefully a sign of more board to PC games to come
I love a lot of underground board games and I hope that we start to see a lot of successful conversions in the future like this one. Sometimes it can be hard getting a group together to play some of my favorite games.
I got this game via steam and aside from some longer than expected load times the game runs really well. The graphics, detail, and presentation are really great and the commentators are a nice touch without being too annoying.
I have actually never played the board game though I recently purchased a used copy after playing this. I have yet to try out the real time strategy option but I probably won't because I like playing it modeled after the board game.
One critique I have is that the tutorials could have been a little more involved, possibly with a newbies campaign or a newbies match at the very least, however the digital copy comes with a manual and strategy guide which I plan on diving into, but until then I have been reading rule books found online for the standard board game.
Overall this is the type of game that you need to allow yourself to be pulled into, no doubt it will be a must have with current blood bowl fans, because even though I never played the original it is easy to see that they put some care into this and I think it will be a big hit with that group. I think playing it with friends is where it will really shine, and I plan on playing over the internet. I am not sure what non board gamers and other strategy gamers will think, but I believe it is worth a shot.
