Guillemot knew what they were doing on this one.5
This Thrustmaster Fire Storm is the most expensive gamepad in their series. But it is more then justified by the wide variety of options offered. There are a total of 13 buttons that are all placed so wonderfully that's is a good question on how the figured out how to make ever button so easy to reach. There are also two analog mini-joysticks that will help you out with all those EA sport games that require 360 degrees of motion. This particular model also has two independent motors for force feedback and it doesn't need batteries or extra cables or anything like that. This is very much like a PS2 controller in everway except one. That is it fits in your hands like you were meant to never let go of it. It's an awesome controller and for the price it's the most unbeatable deal out there.

    Was unsure5
I thought when I saw the guy who rated it a one it was going to be a bad buy. I got it and it was awesome. The buttons in the back are great, they aren't in the way. Also the analog sticks can be turned on and off with one button. Though the rumble feature hasn't worked, it's still awesome. I got it to play with a psx emulator and it worked great. All the buttons are in the right spot and work great as a ps controller look-a-like.

Perfection in the palm of you hand5
I had problems but they are easy to correct if you follow the directions.

    Anyway This controllers hilights are.
    +2 Force feedback motors.
    +soft rubber feeling is perfect.
+similar to psx controllers but for my hands.
    +expensive feel
    +no batteries needed/USB
    +mouse emulation
    +keyboard emulation
    +Its 30 bux!

    the one and only downside.
-uncomfortable by the 2 fingers that wrap aound the bottoms of the controller/below all of the buttons.
This is only a problem if you grip the controller too tightly.

Its imperfections are outweighed by the numerous plus's.
So its definitely worth the price.

note: the controllers analog sticks are not ultra precise and sometimes jitter. but you never notice it in the games; only in the joystick setup in control panel.

    Versatile...5
As is the case with the majority of today's high-end gamepads, the Firestorm is a two-handed boomerang-shaped rig with thick handles that droop down from either end. It is very comfortable, with a chunky stature that fits perfectly in your hands, a thin rubber coating for extra cushiness, and sensibly arranged controls that keep everything directly beneath your fingers. With two force feedback motors, the unit certainly weighs more than its non-force feedback sibling, the Firestorm Dual Analog Gamepad, yet Thrustmaster has positioned those motors inside each handle and thus created a perfectly balanced unit. And because several of the controls are either camouflaged or hidden from view, the Firestorm looks far less gaudy than most of its competitors.

Sporting four action buttons and a miniature analog stick on the right, an eight-way digital directional pad and another analog stick on the left, and one more button in the middle, the topside of the unit alone packs enough controls for most games. But when you consider that the underside houses a total of six more buttons, two for each index finger and one more for each middle finger, the Firestorm really begins to seem like something special. Each thumb-operated rotating stick also serves as an additional button (by pressing down upon it), and that brings the total button count to a spectacular 13, which should be sufficient for virtually any task.

    Clumsy2
This is a very clumsy controller. Although it comes at a very appetizing price, the quality reflects that low price. The wing controls often get in the way because they are so thick and the buttons don't always respond well because there's too much space between the control board inside and where the buttons are. Got with teh Wingman Gamepad instead, it's a bit more expensive, but the quality is 100x better.

Great PS2 type controller for PC5
I've always looked for a great controller that replicates the comfort and ease of button usage as the PS2 controller so that I can play sporting games on the PC. I shopped around a little and have found this to be the best one with full analog abilities. None of the buttons are to sticky or to soft. I found the analog sticks to be very smooth. I also found the controller to extremely comfortable and the additional two buttoms in were placed in a convienent spot which ended up being very usefull. If your looking for a PS2 like controller for the PC then I reccomend this one over any other. I've played madden and nba live and they work amazingly (the nba live free style modes is sweet with this controller).

    Pure Gamepad goodness...5
I have had tons of PC pads, PC sticks, you name it. I'm of the seaminly small group of people who don't love (or even really like) the PS/PS2 pads. I don't even have all that big of hands, but the PS pad seems too small for me. I don't like the shape or feel of it much at all. Thrustmaster has about the perfect pad here. Ok, not perfect, but better then anything else I've used. The layout is incredible, the size is perfect, it feels so nice in my hands. It's very responsive and accurate. Without those two factors nothing else really matters. I would recommend this pad for anyone who wants a PC pad. And if you own a Console, you can get a "Firestorm" for it, they make a PS2 & Xbox version. Also there's a wireless version. I've never used it, but Thrustmaster makes outstanding products, so I'm sure it would be worthy.

Excellent - vibration, accurate and all!5
This is the best PC game pad I had so far, I thought th eMicrosoft would be best for my pc but guess I was wrong! This pad comes with a profiler cd that allows you to configure it how best you like it That alone it's tops!
Dual joysticks control fluid motion for firing sideways, down up backing up! Just Awesome! Best $... I ever spent on a gamepad. Gotta get one for yourself then you will know!

    Amazon.com Review
Still playing racing games with a joystick or keyboard? Maybe it's time to invest in something like the ThrustMaster racing wheel, which offers more precision and--with the addition of force-feedback effects that let you actually feel the action--a lot more fun.

The box contains the wheel unit and a pedal unit. The wheel comes with a tough, rubber coating that offers a good grip and enough buttons to keep you from having to reach for the keyboard too often during a race. The front of the wheel has two normal buttons and a pair of hat switches within easy reach of your thumbs. The switches can be programmed with up to four commands each. There are also two pairs of paddle switches behind the wheel. The upper pair is best used for shifting, while the bottom pair can be used for anything else you like. There is a "shifter" on the right side of the wheel, but it's a simple switch that can be pushed forward or backward. A good deal of force is required to move the shifter, and it has a nice feel. But don't mistake this glorified pair of extra buttons for a real gated shifter.

The pedals are on a narrow base and are hinged on the top; they feel more like real car pedals than any others we've tested. They also have a lot of travel, making precise throttle and braking modulations possible. Many pedals have so little travel they basically act like an on/off switch. As with most wheels, you only get an accelerator pedal and a brake pedal. There's no clutch. It doesn't really matter, though, as manual-type shifting is impossible with the wheel setup.

A splitter cable gives users the choice of attaching the wheel to either a serial port or a USB (universal serial bus) port. After securing the wheel to our desk using the solid clamping mechanism, we used the USB connection, and Windows immediately recognized the product. We then installed the drivers using the included CD-ROM and were immediately able to use the wheel with our racing games. Guillemot also includes a simple interface for programming the wheel's buttons, but we had better results just using the button-programming features of the games we played to establish unique settings for each software title.

As a pure racing wheel, this product did great in our tests, serving up smooth, precise control in both arcade games like Need for Speed: High Stakes and more realistic simulations like NASCAR Racing 3. Many force-feedback wheels have a dead spot near the wheel's central position, which makes precision turns difficult. This wheel has none of those problems, moving in a perfectly smooth arc from the left stop to the right stop.

The only problem we had with the wheel was with its surprisingly coarse force-feedback effects. Crashes and other major events like being slammed by opponents' vehicles were accompanied by suitably realistic wheel jerks, but the wheel wasn't as good at reproducing more subtle rumbles. Rolling over wooden bridges, hopping small curbs, and getting in minor scrapes often occurred with fewer small thumps than we've found in other wheels we've tested. Still, this Ferrari-branded product provides more accurate steering than many other force-feedback products, so the tradeoff may be worth it. --T. Byrl Baker

    Pros:

  • Smooth operation
  • Plenty of buttons
  • USB or serial-port installation
  • Quality construction
  • Hinged pedals

    Cons:

  • Few gradations in force-feedback effects

One of the best force feedback wheel!5
Simply put, this is one of the best force feedback driving wheels in the market and you won't be disappointed on its features and performance, especially when it compares with other wheels.

I've been playing PC racing sims for some years and I own the following games: Grand Prix Legends, Mobil 1 Rally Championship, Nascar 2000, Nascar 3, Colin McRae Rally 2.0, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed, Sports Car GT and many other older games. When the very first force feedback wheels came out, I rushed to buy them and the results were mostly disappointing. I have tried Microsoft FFB (mediocare), Interact (worst, IMHO), Logitech Formula Force (the older one, which is a much better one than the later model), Logitech Formula Force GP (the newer one, yet inferior, but it works with my PS2 on GT3) and the ACT-Labs Force RS (the best among all. The Ferrari wheel is definitely only 2nd to the Act-labs Force, and way way above the rest.

To sum up what I like about this wheel:

    1) Very strong force feedback

    2) Lots of buttons on the wheel for one-touch quick keys

    3) Have both stick shift and paddle shift helps Rally-style and F1-style racing respectively

    4) Precise steering

    5) Good feeling steering wheel

    6) Good clamp to hold it steadily onto the table

The only few things I don't like about this wheel:

    1) The pedals are too close for people with big feet

    2) The pedal platform is likely to skid around if put on carpet (easily fixed if it's put against a wall)

    3) Too many wires connecting the wheel and the pedals and they are not the most smartly located

All in all, I think this wheel helps me decreasing my lap time significantly and immersing myself much more into the game. For example, it's just great to feel your car losing grip in a corner and eventually regain it and steer accordingly. The best thing is, you can use the on both your PC and PS2 (just a caution, it might be impossible to config the buttons in PS2 as it's not offically supported by Sony)!!!

    Poor Windows XP Support3
If you are considering purchasing this product and have Windows XP, you may want to wait a bit until better drivers are released. As of this writing (11/12/01), the 3.08 version of the Thrustmaster drivers just do not work. Thrustmaster is currently working on the issue, but it may be some time before the newer drivers are released.

I really like the hardware itself. The wheel is comfortable, easy to use, and handles perfectly. Unfortunately, it just does not work reliably with my operating system.

    Vaarooommm!!5
Look no further cause this is it!! After owning a very entry level wheel I just upgraded to the Ferrari Wheel and Whoa Ha what a difference. This is the real thing. Great response, fantastic feel of the road, you even feel when other cars hit you. Definitely fun and extremely realistic steering and feel.

The negatives include the fact that it is a bit expensive. Also, now that they have done so much with the wheel maybe they can do something about the pedals! Then there is that pesky little clutch, or lack there of. Myself, a person who has always driven a manual transmission, would really love to find a clutch!!

However, the positives definitely outweigh the negatives so go for it.

    Greatest of all racing wheels!5
Forget about Logitech Racing Wheel, I mean, this is a serious "driving machine", it's incredible the way it feels, there is not much to say but CONGRATULATIONS! Guillemot, incredible job you did on your extraordinary racing wheel, whith a big PLUS! , for all you Ferrari Fans, this steering wheel is brandend by, youre right, FERRARI, this is a must have, if you want to really feel youre driving.

    Best wheel I've used yet!!!5
I have to say that this is the wheel makes for the most enjoyable video game experience I've ever had. It is truly a great purchase if you like driving simulators. I've used some other brand wheels that my friends had, but this one is far superior. They even went and purchased this one after trying it.

I'm using this primarily on a Windows 98 machine with Grand Prix 3. It works flawlessly and I've never had any problems with it. The only nuisance I've had was that occasionally when I wouldn't use it for a while (but it was still plugged in) it would "loose connection" with the computer and would be non responsive. This was very easily fixed by unplugging the USB connector and then plugging it back in.

I can't recommend this wheel enough!! I just wish it worked with my PS2.

Installed in 30 seconds in Windows ME5
I don't know what that other guy's problem was, but I finished installed this wheel in less than a minute from the time I put the CD in the drive. I love the feel of this wheel and the movements of the pedals (two hinges) feels real. All the buttons (lots of them) are very well placed as is the HAT and D-pad. I love the Ferrari shifters and the shifter on the side. It makes for some variety and makes you feel like you are driving a diferent car. Get this if you want to feel like you are really behind the wheel of the car.

    superficial quality3
I have been using the Cougar for over a year now and have concluded that it is a combination of the best and the worst in consumer products. In the end analysis it is ok for someone who doesn't mind tinkering, modifying and repairing. If it wasn't for the online community I would have thrown my Cougar away a long time ago. These guys are the BEST thing going for the Cougar. Support from the manufacturer is far from acceptable. Now for the good and the bad.

This product has a great feel about it. Largely because it's all metal, heavy and seems durable. The metal, however, is very soft and, consequently, easy to strip threads. The switches and pots are low quality. Replacement pots are only available through the manufacturer as they were specially made. (I think by CTS) The Throttle Quadrant has a speed brake switch which is on in the forward position, off in the middle position and momentary on in the back position. The switch itself is the toggle variety. It is guided by a plastic guide that works well when properly aligned but there is nothing designed into the product to insure alignment. You'll have to fix this yourself or the guide is likely to break. Fortunately the procedure is detailed in Frugals World Cougar forum.

Programmability is a big plus with the Cougar. Again, if you are not up to tinkering and just want to plug and play, look for something else. If you don't mind spending some time with your face in the manual and working through a profile or two you will have incredible flexibility.

The throttle itself is rather sticky through its range of motion and there are two detents for idle and afterburner. All in all it is clunky and I opted to remove the detents. As far as the sticky motion is concerned I have yet to find a way to fix it.

The Cougar is not really a desktop item. Sure it's heavy and you would think it would stay put but it doesn't. It is a lot more enjoyable when anchored to a platform. If you are contemplating this purchase I suggest that you go to and get familiar with http://cougar.frugalsworld.com/. They will be your primary support group and you can get some insight to the problems and soulutions that the rest of us are working through.
Pay special attention to the instructions when loading the software. There seems to be a problem with version 2.04 that damages the throttle pot.

    All show, no go2
    Pros:
    1. metal and sturdy (except throttle lever support which is plastic and actually broke on mine). Metal makes for great feel of the stick, much better than any plastic joystick.

    2. Vast programming abilities (rivaled only by top competition equipment). This is, IMO, the best thing about the Cougar.

    3. Impressive looks and design - a real stunner. Better than any other joystick in this regard.

    Cons:
    1. Poor gimbal construction. The stick will inevitably develop center play which, in combination with stiff springs, makes the center position feel like a detent - this effectively denies any precision control near the center. A fix for this is available as a 3rd party product, but is costly - almost twice as the Cougar itself.

    2. Poor quality potentiometers. With joystick this expensive, HAL (contactless magnetic potentiometers) are the way to go, or at least high quality potentiometers found in competition products. HAL potentimeters for Cougar are also available as a 3rd party product, but are costly (a kit of three is slightly less than 200$).

    3. Sticky feel with throttle. The material has quite a difference in friction, which means it is hard to move the throttle, but once you do move it, it is hard to stop it in desired position. No precision here. If the resistance is lowered, the throttle lever falls forward/backward due to its own weight !

Verdict: A wannabe quality product which simply falls short in crucial areas. Requires significant additional costs to make it work as advertised. Definitely not recommended, as there are much better options out there.

A Hobby unto Itself. Softcore Simmers Beware.3
For two years I owned a Thrustmaster Cougar HOTAS, touted as the ultimate flight simmer's controller, and in that time I all but stopped simming. Honestly, in two years I flew perhaps a dozen hours at most. Before the Cougar, I simmed much more--off and on for years--and did so on lousy to middling equipment: bargain-bin trash, a CH Flightstick, and later, a CH Combatstick USB. By then I found myself playing Falcon 4.0 religiously, so when it became "necessary" to pick up a throttle, I passed over the homely CH Pro Throttle and reached for the sexy, uber-F16 controller, the Cougar.

Next to the Cougar, any other controller looks like it came free with a Happy Meal. It's so sleek yet solid and rugged--it's simply gorgeous. You'll find yourself ogling it, polishing it, displaying it, and even fashioning dust covers for it. You'll also appreciate its features, ergonomics and simplicity. The trigger is dual-stage. Every button on the throttle falls under a finger. And that throttle, along with gameport rudder pedals (should you have them), plugs directly into the stick base, forging a single mega-controller with a gazillion buttons and axes, all routed to your PC through a single USB plug. Elegant.

Packaged with the Cougar comes a simmer's dream date: a 183-page manual, your guide to the complex software suite that drives the Cougar. You'll want to take it to bed, curl up under a reading lamp and spend the night with it. But that's where the problems start. It doesn't illuminate; it obfuscates. If the Cougar Reference Manual concerned baseball, chapter one would be "The Infield Fly Rule," and the first page would delve into the Old English etymology of "field." In other words, one must learn Cougar-programming in spite of it. Expect to spend several Saturdays getting nowhere. Expect to procrastinate, and, for the thin-skinned among you, expect to give up. And that's too bad, because the point of owning a Cougar, besides its looks, is to harness its powerful programming features for your own purposes.

Ultimately, though, the Cougar is a piece of hardware, and yes, a great looking one. So how does it feel? In a word, STIFF. As a former (and current) CH user, I found it difficult to make small, discreet motions with the stick and tiring to hold precise bank angles. I also found it tough to move the throttle; to paraphrase another reviewer, it's tough to get it going, and once going, tough to stop on a dime (though to be fair, it's the only throttle I've tried). Then there's the issue of bad potentiometers, a common Cougar complaint. Bad pots mean dead axes, and dirty pots mean "spiking" or sudden input surges. I experienced neither. Yet reading Cougar forums induces a nagging fear that those pots will eventually require replacement, or at least periodic cleaning. That's off-putting, to say the least; I thought the whole point of buying the best is so you don't have to do this. In fact, many a happy Cougar owner does this and more, tackling its shortcomings through third-party upgrades: new potentiometers, softer springs, precision-machined brass gimbals, aluminum switch casings, and so on. These mods require not only cash--lots of it--but time, technical expertise and a modest workshop, complete with soldering iron, multimeter and an assortment of lubricants and cleansers. Even getting the Cougar to work as advertised with CH Products' Pro Pedals Gameport (arguably the standard in analog pedals) takes a rewiring job. Not exactly plug-and-play.

Clearly, there's a type of simmer who revels in this. He's the kind of person who loves to work on his car over the weekend. Personally, I'd rather drive my car and leave repairs to my local mechanic. In the case of the Cougar, unfortunately, that mechanic is you, baby, you! Do yourself a favor and take a personality test before buying one. If you lack the tinkerer temperament, not to mention time (sims take enough time already!), engineering smarts and excess cash, consider looking elsewhere. Or you just might end up doing what I did: nothing. I let my Cougar sit idle until one day I sold it.

    Amazon.com Review
For the price of a new racing game, you can get a complete racing wheel with pedals that will add enjoyment to the games you already have. The ThrustMaster NASCAR Charger is a low-cost device that surprised us with its accuracy and relatively solid design.

The wheel unit connects to a PC via a game port, meaning it'll work with every racing game on the market--including older titles that run under MS-DOS. We unpacked the wheel and quickly had it secured to our desktop; the quick-release clamps made it easy to remove the device when we needed our PC for more mundane tasks. The wheel is hard plastic all over, with four buttons on the front and two paddle shifters in the back, all of which are programmable. It doesn't support fancy features like force-feedback, so no bulky external power supply is necessary.

When we first pulled the included pedal unit out of the box, we couldn't help but laugh. The Lilliputian brake and gas pedals sit on a tiny base and are spaced only about an inch from one another. To make matters worse, the gas pedal can be compressed only a few inches and the brake pedal hardly moves. This definitely is not an ideal setup for success in realistic racing simulations like NASCAR Racing 3 or Grand Prix Legends. As we soon found out, however, the pedals were just fine for arcade-type driving games like Need for Speed: High Stakes.

The software for the NASCAR Charger is as basic as the hardware. After the installation process was completed, a simple configuration program let us calibrate the device and make sure all the buttons were working, but that was about it. We were glad to see that Guillemot didn't bog the software down with a bunch of useless features, as many manufacturers do.

We weren't expecting much from the wheel in actual operation, considering the price of the unit and the ridiculously small pedals. But the NASCAR Charger never failed to impress, especially in arcade games. The fact that the brake pedal had little travel made it ideal for the split-second brake-slamming tricks most arcade racing games require and made Need for Speed: High Stakes a blast. The real star of the setup is the wheel, which had a perfect amount of resistance for racing--strong enough to allow for curve-carving precision, yet light enough to let us quickly reverse our turns. It was the kind of precision we would have expected from products costing two to three times as much. This little wheel really delivers.

We had two minor problems with the device. Foremost is the narrow base for the pedals, which tended to tip to the right when we pressed hard on the gas. A few strips of duct tape solved that little dilemma, but a wider pedal base would greatly enhance this product. Our other gripe was with the wheel, as the fit and finish wasn't up to Guillemot's typical standards. The back and inside edge of the wheel had a semisharp seam and some other bits of plastic that made driving uncomfortable at times. Again, the solution is simple--give it a rub with some sandpaper--but customers shouldn't have to do things like that. If you can put up with the product's few faults, you can have an incredibly fun, precise wheel that delivers more hours of fun than the low price would indicate. --T. Byrl Baker

For the low price, it's a great accessory (with one caveat)4
The most obvious comment to make is on the price. It's so inexpensive that I would recommend it to anyone who has even a casual interest in racing games. It really does make a world of difference when playing these games (and you become a much better driver too!)

The software was easy to install and it plugs into a serial port (usually with the sound card.) The calibration worked fine so I haven't run into problems with the cars drifting in one direction or another. I have to warn people that this was made back in the Win95/98 days and I'm not sure if it'll work properly with Win2000 or XP. You may want to pop an email to Thrustmaster just to make sure before buying.

Because of the low price, you may think Thrustmaster cut corners. As far as the wheel is concerned this is not the case. It has a nice grip and just enough resistance to make you feel like you're leaning into the turns. Let go of the wheel and it snaps back into place. It's designed to "clamp" on to a desk and the grip is nice and solid. Two buttons and a rudder pedal are on each side of the wheel. These can be programmed for additional functions such as gear shifting, looking behind, horn, etc...

The one area Thrustmaster where really skimped out is on the flimsy pedals included with the set. First off they're so small a small child can't fit their foot on them. Plus they're too close together to be considered realistic. Finally, the base is so lightweight that your attempts at stepping on the gas may send them flying across the floor. I have to hold the base down with one foot while depressing the gas pedal with the other. Annoying. I'm considering disconnecting them and just using the rudder pedals for acceleration (or super-gluing the pedals to the floor.)

I originally bought this back when Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed was still popular but never hooked it up for some reason. I guess it's because I was able to get by using the keyboard. EA's latest release, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit II has such bad driving physics that it's virtually unplayable using a keyboard. Hooking this wheel up, however made a world of difference (it's actually playable now), so I'd recommend it to anyone who plays these or other racing games for fun. If you're a real racing enthusiast, you may want to bypass this for a wheel with quality pedals.

    Hope the review helped!

    Nice Accessory5
I bought one of these a year ago for my 2 year old son (who is now 3). He loves it. It allowed him to play on the computer before he was was adept with the mouse or keyboard. I am certain he would give this 5 stars. His favourite automobile games are Sierra Viper and Need for Speed Porche. He enjoys it still.

great racing wheel,go buy it now!!!4
The thrustmaster pro digital 2 wheel has been one of the best wheels I've had for over a year now. I play my racing games with this wheel every night for hours and it has with stood the pressure I've put on the it day in and out. The pedals and wheel are easy to program, easy to operate and can take the pressure form on line racing I've put this wheel through. It has a great clamp that holds it into place(even when you are really getting into your game). I give this wheel a 4 rating,It would get a 5 but I feel that only one thing is a short fall for this wheel. This wheel has only one thing that I would like to see made just a little stronger, and this would be the gas and brake pedals. They are very good but after one year of very hard use,I've broken the pedals. I guess when you are into your game you don't realize the amount of force you use,so I've broken mine,BUT IT TOOK IT FOR ONE YEAR. Pro digital 2 wheel is what I'm buying again,it may break after a year but it is that good!!!

    so much fun5
this is my first wheel and i love it i play it every day and never had any problems with it. i use it with nascar 2002 and it works great

    Decent wheel, but nothing outstanding3
I recently purchased this wheel for my 12 year old nephew, and he is thoroughly delighted with the wheel. The only complaint I have is that by not being a force feedback design, it gives a totally dead feel for the user. It works great with the Need For Speed series of games, and also does well with the Sierra NASCAR Racing games.
