We often hear gamers bandying the expression "my mouse is an extension of my hand" in relation to their Razer mice. This pretty much sums up what which we set out to achieve each and every time we approach the drawing board - a fine equilibrium between in-game performance and comfort that exists with Razer mice and with none other. This three-way (user-mouse-playstyle) optimization is the result of research-driven design, not by casual observation, and certainly not by chance. Through the validation sessions conducted with both "casual" and "hardcore" gamers over the years, we have identified three prevalent grip styles: palm, claw and fingertip.

Here, we present our findings on, established through years of both "casual" and "hardcore" gamer testing, that have informed, and continue to inform, the ergonomic development of our mice.

The Razer DeathAdder utilizes the most commonly used method to hold a computer mouse is what is known as the "palm grip." This method involves the user placing his entire hand onto the top of the mouse, resting his palm and the pit of his hand on the rear of the mouse's shell. The mouse is held and controlled by the user pinching his hand together to hold the mouse between his thumb, the heel of his palm and his ring or pinkie fingers. The index and middle fingers are usually placed fully on the left and right mouse buttons respectively. A slight variation of the palm grip style is where the pinkie finger is used as the right side stabilizer to hold the mouse, with the index, middle and ring fingers placed on the left button, scroll wheel and right button respectively.

The palm grip is defined by the fact that the entire surface of the user's fingers and palm make contact with the surface of the mouse and the contact points on the mouse are large and undefined. (See Fig. 1)

Actuation of the left and right mouse button is achieved by clicking either button with the entire index or middle finger, essentially pressing the entire length of either finger down to actuate the respective button.

The palm grip is most commonly used with ergonomic mice; that is, mice with contours that match the shape and natural curvature of a human hand. Such ergonomic mice are also typically only able to be used in one specific hand - i.e. either the right hand or the left hand.

While this grip style is not used exclusively with ergonomic mice, the palm grip is most often used on ergonomic mice as the high-arched back common to ergonomic mice will allow the user's palm and the entire length of his index and middle fingers to come in contact with the top of the mouse. Since the user's hand almost entirely "rests" on the mouse, many users attest this to be the most comfortable way to hold a mouse. (See Fig. 2)

While moving the mouse with the palm grip style, the user can perform actions at a higher IPS because the use of the entire forearm and the wrist enables the user to make large swiping motions with the mouse. By making these large swiping motions, the user must set his in-game sensitivity to a very low sensitivity level; otherwise, the counts received by the computer will be too high and this will result in highly exaggerated movements in-game.

Selecting a low sensitivity setting essentially allows the user to cover a larger mousing surface area, with greater velocity per hand swipe, yet maintain extreme accuracy in-game due to the smaller spans of onscreen cursor movement.

This style of play is commonly seen in professional FPS gaming, where gamers tend to move the mouse over a large surface area repeatedly to scan the area quickly in-game, in order to make 180 degree turns or move the targeting reticule from one target to another as quickly as possible.

The palm grip is the default way many users use to hold a computer mouse, and is found to be more comfortable for a user not accustomed to manipulating the mouse by lifting it and making constant adjustments with the fingers and palm.

With the palm grip, the user will primarily move the mouse by exerting force with his forearm and wrist to "push" the mouse around the mousing surface. By using this method, the user is able to move the mouse at higher speeds, and achieve higher Inches Per Second (IPS) ratings by doing so. Some gamers fine-tune their movements by rotating and pivoting their wrists, but gross speed is still the primary advantage that palm grip users experience.

The palm grip is also considered one of the most comfortable grip styles for gaming where the gamer is able to continue playing for extended hours without experiencing fatigue.

    Great upgrade from Deathadder5
I previously had a Deathadder 1800dpi mouse for a few years, and felt it was time for a upgrade. I was so used to the deathadder that I thought about getttng a mamba instead since its the same shell. I looked into the new 3500dpi deathadder as well, but wanted to go for the full 5600dpi...
Let me say that this mouse doesn't dissapoint. The ergonomic feel is more precise than the deathadder, much better than the log*tech line of gamer mice. The on the fly dpi buttons behind the wheel are a nice upgrade from the deathadder. The cable is braided and feels much stronger than that of older razer mice. The main thing that I was worried about was the smaller side buttons and the slider thing... I use the side buttons for a lot of games and these, though smaller, are just as easy to get to as the deathadder's side buttons. The slider is actually very useful for getting a more customized feel to the mouse. The sensor is very accurate, Though going full 5600dpi in windows for internet browsing, ect, is way to fast. I turn mine down to 2000dpi in for normal browsing and in games crank it up to 5600 in game. I play HL2DM and CSS and turned in game sens. down from 4.0 to 0.9 to get the same feel as the 1800dpi deathadder.
Overall this mouse is very good and I would definetly reccomend getting it if ur old deathadder needs to be retired like mine. 5/5 stars! Another great product from Razer!

    Killer Mouse5
I am WoW player and spend ~ 9-12 hours a day in game. I was looking for a mouse that not only felt good in my hands but more importantly be able to use it for hours. The imperator did a Very good job at not only making a great looking mouse but also make it easy on your hands. If you are like me and are moving from a low sensitivity to a high one, please give it 2-3 days. I suggest that you leave the mouse at around 3000DPI and runnin at 1000 Hz. Thats what I use and it works great. The software that comes with the mouse is very very nice and just the fact that you can have multiple profiles and change them right on the mouse is AWESOME. I do use the two buttons on the mouse that allow you to go up and down DPI. For example when I am working with images in Photoshop i sometimes like to turn it down when i want to be VERY exact about what im doing. Anyway...great mouse! If you like the design it wont disappoint on performance.

Razor does the best Mouses ever5
I was always reading about razor products and i haven't believed the quality until i tried it my self, i bought the Razer Imperator Mouse because it has the latest mouse technology and whats written about it is true, very accurate, and has an ergonomic design also easy to use and configure. I think i will never change to another brand for anything related to PC accessories (mouses and Keyboards)
