    Tactile Feedback Technology
Traditionally, communication via control devices has been a one-way street. You move your mouse, joystick, wheel, gamepad, etc., and that device communicates a signal to the PC or console. Communication back to you could only come from the display (PC monitor or TV) or from speakers.

Tactile feedback adds technology to control devices that allows them to communicate to you as well. Today, the two primary types of tactile feedback for control devices are vibration feedback and force-feedback.

    About Vibration Feedback
Vibration feedback works on the same principles as the vibration mode in your mobile phone or pager, but is typically much more sophisticated. It can be used to communicate specific ideas or sensations. The effects can range from a simple buzz that serves as an alert or confirmation, to a slower rhythmic motion that simulates vibrations from an approaching train, to a single, strong jolt that simulates a collision.

However, vibration feedback cannot resist your movement, assist it, or provide any directional movement or information. Because they are much simpler, vibration feedback devices tend to be much less expensive than force-feedback devices.

    About Force Feedback
Force-feedback is a more sophisticated technology and provides people with very realistic tactile feedback. It has been widely used for some time in medical, space and flight simulators to provide lifelike training for students and professionals who make split-second decisions based not just on sight and sound, but also on their sense of touch.

This cutting-edge technology has been extended to PC and next-generation console gaming over the last five years, and is now coming to the Nintendo GameCube. Force-feedback is substantially more rich, realistic and engaging than the non-directional vibration feedback to which many gamers are accustomed. Through the use of advanced software and electronics, force-feedback can move a steering wheel, joystick, or mouse as if the device were subject to real external forces.

Force-feedback devices include one or more motors plus additional mechanical and electrical components and are capable of a wide variety of effects. Force-feedback can resist your movement, or assist it, and is capable of providing specific directional movement and information. And it can also provide sophisticated vibration.

    Important Ergonomic Information
Whether you spend five minutes or five hours using your game wheel, these suggestions can help you stay comfortable and productive. Some research suggests that long periods of repetitive motion, using an improperly set up work space, incorrect body position, and poor work habits may be associated with physical discomfort and injury to nerves, tendons, and muscles. If you feel pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, swelling, burning, cramping, or stiffness in your hands, wrists, arms, shoulder, neck, or back, see a qualified health professional. MOMO Very Good4
I have tried pretty much every wheel there is. From low end Thrustmaster to the Microsoft Precision and Force Feedback, to BRD to even real high end stuff from Act Labs, etc.

For $$$$$, this is the best wheel on the market. The Logitech MOMO Force is being discontinued by Logitech, but is probably the finest wheel you can get outside of going very high end. ..... I'd grab these Force wheels while they are still selling them, with 4 solid ball bearings on the traversal and a very high quality force motor, it's a bargain.

The reasons it doesn't score perfectly are that the pedals are a matter of taste, many people don't like the swivel head on the pedals, and... and this is important - it has a nasty tendency to not be centered correctly and you have to use a hard to find utility to get totally centered.

    A guilty pleasure5
As a full-grown adult far closer to the grave than the cradle, I can't help but feel guilty over the pleasure of "racing" with this sturdily made wheel and peddles. Combined with the top-notch graphics of "Need for Speed, Porsch Unleashed" or "Colin McRae Rally 2.0," the simulation is top notch.

The rumble of the idling racing car waiting for the starting flag is conveyed through the wheel in the former title. Than, as advertised, the force feedback provides a credible feel for the road and for one's forays off road into the resistant gravel, the more slippery hard-packed mud, or the crunching snow.

I raced for some time with the wheel off-center -- which was no problem at all except for the aesthetic desire to see the wheel upright on the straight away. But, I finally decided to look for the "hard-to-find" utility to properly center the wheel -- a search that took less than a minute on the Logitech site. The utility downloaded within ten seconds and worked like a charm. So, now, I don't have even a nit to pick.

The pedals work fine, especially barefoot. The break and accelearator could be spaced apart an inch or two more, but even with my size 12's, they are quite workable.

The feel of both the pedals and the wheel give me the impression that they will hold up for a very long time.

What don't I like about this product? Well, for a 59-year old, it is embarrasing to own. But, that's a criticism of me, not the wheel. The difference between racing with the wheel and a joystick is the difference between swimming with shoes and swimming with flippers. If you enjoy autoracing games, you'll enjoy it all the more with this set-up.

The wires come out of the left-hand side of the pedals. If your CPU is on your right, the wires can be an annoyance. This minor problem can be addressed either by moving the CPU or by using some masking tape to stick the wires to the base front to avoid tempting them to get in the way of the pedals.

Is it worth the money? You decide. It does all you can expect it to do -- improve the feel of the race, improve your driving performance, and add considerably both to the realism and enjoyment of the experience. So, the question is, "How much is that worth to you?" not "Will the wheel satisfy?" It will satisfy if the guilt of the indulgence isn't too overpowering for you.

    5 Stars ... but for the pedals4
Excellent wheel. Solid construction. Looks great. Easy software install. The wheel clamp systems works fine. The pedal base is of good weight and size so it doesn't move around. The only downside are the pedals which are a bit light in spring rate and short in range of movement. Overall, the MOMO Force is a great deal for the price.

[ I did a million virtual miles with a TSW wheel, but the MOMO Force adds a whole new dimension to 'burning time' with its Force Feedback. ;-) ]
